Ballyhoura Active Trail runs

The Ballyhoura trail series kicked off on Saturday morning last in Kilfinane. It was a nice cool crisp Autumn morning, but as the Sun rose it became more and more like a Summers morning. With conditions perfect for a morning run, our group headed out of Kilfinane on the Ballylanders road and entered  through the Ballyriggan end of Slieve Riad just after a mile of road and trail and road again we went over the style leading across the river and into the woods. The trail was slippery under foot for a while and mucky in spots but the narrow trail in between the tall Trees was magical with sharp turns and the soft peaty and pine needle under foot paths with the odd exposed Tree root was a lovely surface to run on. At 2 miles out as we entered the forest fire roads this was the turning point for the short course, only 2 runners opted to turn here as all the rest continued on to finish the 7 mile course. I shortened the course up to the trail head, to reduce the amount of road in it. The runners were greeted here with fruit, Biscuits, Juice and water. Everyone enjoyed this route and we are going to do it all over again next Saturday, thanks to all who turned up and to kilfinane AC for their help with the event.

Coum baun woods next Saturday Morning 18th of October at 10.00 am is our next event, Coum baun woods is a mile outside Angelsborough on the Kilbenny road on your left hand side there are two route choices on these fire roads. The short course is 4 miles of fire roads on perfect surface any type of running shoes will do on this course, it is really easy to follow this course as at 400meters up the trail, you come to a cross roads here you go straight through and keep left all the way around the hill, until you get back to this point where you turn right and head to the finish 400 meters down. The 7 mile route is just an extension of this as you follow the Bernard looped walk route. I will put up extra markers to make it easier to follow the route. I would encourage beginners to do the shorter route. This route has been proposed by  Mooreabbey Milers AC and they are helping me with it. The same rules apply as always bring a buddy to run with,€5 each €10 per family.

Ballyhoura Autumn/Winter Trail run series

I would like to thank everyone who tried out the Trim trail over the weekend, This is a great facility to have locally and is a great tool for clubs and individuals to train on, as well as the casual family out for a stroll in the woods and its free of charge.

This Saturday 11th at 10.00 am I am in Kilfinane, for the start of our Autumn/Winter trail series, I have a fantastic course set up for you. We will be meeting at the church car park in Kilfinane and running out the Ballylanders road where you follow the Kilfinane purple trail route. When you run down Mill hill you will see the trail head straight ahead, you go up here about 200 meters and join in to a small country road, going left we follow this road using the purple walk markers as our guide all the way to its end. There you go over the style, to our right and through the woods this is a beautiful place to run but you will need trail runners or something with a bit of grip as it is quite slippery. After about two miles you leave the high trees and tight forest path and move on to Forest road you pass the Lazy dog shooting grounds and follow the kilfinane purple route around the hill and descend back towards kilfinane, all the way down into the wood where you are once again running in between tall trees you then exit the woods over the style and follow the path back to the road just above Kilfinane Horse trail centre, from here follow the road back into kilfinane and to the church car park. Here you will be greeted with some refreshments. This course is Just over 7 miles we are also doing a 4 mile out and back route on the day.

The Idea behind these trails is to get you comfortable with off road running and give you an alternative to running on roads, we welcome all runners on the day and run a sweeper system so no one gets lost. The course is marked at all main Junctions. If you want to race or just jog depending on your ability we leave it up to you.If you are interested in running these remember to bring a friend to run with you, we will also be registering people before each event the fee is €5per person €10 per family. This fee is just to cover our expenses.

Ballyhoura Trim Trail

The Ballyhoura Trim Trail is up and running and this Saturday I will be meeting Groups to try it out. For those like me who didn’t know what a trim trail was, it is an obstacle course which contains 19 different obstacles. The 19 obstacles are varied with push ups, sit ups, Frog leaps etc. We have them laid out on a 2.4 km  looped course each obstacle has a plaque on it, which gives you an idea of what the exercise looks like and a guide to what level of fitness you are at, there are 3 levels listed on each sign,(B) for Beginners, (I) for intermediate, and (E) for elite athletes. If you want to try the course out I will be in the Cycle centre in the Ballyhouras at 9.00 am on Saturday Morning next, If you have a group with just ring me on 0876994976 and I will allocate you a time. The loop will take an average of 15 t0 20 minuter to go around it, We are working on training plans for groups on the course and will be putting up more information soon on our facebook and on our website at the moment you can see what the obstacles look like on this link.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/79917963@N02/sets/72157648102695875/

We are also pushing ahead with our Autumn /Winter trail running season and we will have our first trail run out of Kilfinane. Meeting in Kilfinane village at the church car park  on Saturday 11th at 10.00 am I will put a map and profile on our facebook next week with all relevant information  remember  to bring a friend with you.

The Ballyhoura Active Series

The Charleville International Half Marathon was a phenomenal success at the weekend. North Cork have outdone themselves yet again with another fabulous event this year this event just keeps growing. Conditions this year were perfect as people gathered on the start line for the 10.00 am start it was cool and cloudy and it was cool all during the race but the sun broke through near 12.00 as the last few runners were finishing, so people could bask in the Autumn sun shine while drinking their tea and eating all the goodies. The efficiency that the numbers were handed out before the race was only surpassed by how quick tea and coffee was pored out after the race.

International standards being set in Charleville.

Two former Irish Olympic athletes, Martin Fagan (1:03:57) and Maria McCambridge (1:12:25) headed up a high calibre International field of athletes yesterday winning their respective men’s and women’s categories at the fourth edition of the Charleville International Half-Marathon. Both runners came away with course records and expressed a lot of satisfaction with their performances over the super fast course in one of the most highly competitive road races of the year. The top 8 prize winners in the men’s race all managed to get under the 70 minute mark while the top 4 women all finished in less than 80 minutes. The men’s race included a number of athletes from Belgium and a Ugandan who runs for Dubai Creek Striders Club. A number of Irish international athletes ran some very strong times in what was a very high quality event overall.

This race, hosted by North Cork AC, has developed into a relatively unique event on the Irish road racing scene because of the emphasis which it puts on the competitive side of the race. At the same time the race manages to provide a very good event for those who are more participation orientated also and so strikes a very good balance overall. There were 669 runners who participated in the event this year with athletes entering from all over the country. It was the 12th and final race of the very successful Ballyhoura Active Series which had road race events all over the North Cork and East Limerick region.

With the Series coming to a close we would like to thank all 12 clubs for all there hard work over the series and their professionalism in delivering high quality events all Summer long and I look forward to working with them next year.

I would also like to announce that the Trim trail in the Ballyhouras is up and running and ready for use, and now is your chance to get some practice in as we will be having an official opening of the Trail in the next few weeks.

Ballyhoura Active series

The Final race in the Ballyhoura Active series is on Sunday next 21st Sept @ 10.30 am The Charleville International Half Marathon. This race is a major spectacle with 707 Running in it Last year on a beautiful sunny day, strangely the warm weather was one of the biggest problems for the organisers last year. Well there is nothing you can do about the weather but we will still be looking for fine weather this year.

North Cork AC spent a lot of money to make this event an even bigger and better event for you this year than last year’s race. There are some big names coming this year, and with the race being a Munster championship event the quality up front will be top class. But this event is open to all runners and regardless of your abilities, you will enjoy this event the course is as flat a course as can be found there are plenty of stewards and water stops and great support from spectators. All you have to do is smile and run as we have plenty of cameras on route. Don’t forget that North Cork AC also support local charity St Josephs Foundation.

There will be road closures on the day which will further enhance the event as you won’t have to worry about traffic, this was also done last year and it does make a big difference as the only traffic on the route will be support crew and residential.

For more information check the North Cork AC web site or check out the Charleville Half Marathon on line and check out the new T-Shirts.

Charleville Half Marathon (Ballyhoura Active Series)

The Ballyhoura Active series is drawing to a close as we build up to the Charleville Half ,but fear not we have lots of other events coming on line so keep your eyes on this space.

The Charleville International Half-Marathon can now lay claim to being one of the most competitive road races in Ireland this year. It already boasts the Flattest, Fastest and Straightest Half-Marathon in Ireland, but now because of the elite field which it has assembled, it can add this extra claim to its set of attractive race characteristics!

The standard race entry fee has been extended The standard entry fee rate period which was supposed to end this Thursday 4th September is being extended for one week until Thursday 11th of September to celebrate such a positive growth in numbers and a strong field of athletes attending.                                                                   Go to www.CharlevilleHalf.com/Registration to enter. Email: CharlevilleHalf@gmail.com with any queries. 2014 Lidl Charleville International Half-Marathon The  Charleville International Half-Marathon  (Sunday 21st September 10am) is in its 4th year and is continuing to grow and develop. The event is organised by North Cork AC as a fundraiser for both their activities and for St. Josephs Foundation. The club has donated over 6000 Euro to St Josephs foundation over the last 3years and we intend to give a similar donation this year.

We at Ballyhoura are getting ready to run our trail run series again this Autumn and Winter. We organised and ran this last year we will be inviting you to join us on the trails in the Ballyhouras and other trails in the area these routes will be from 5km to 10 km in length and you will be led or can follow the trail markers. The reason we have done this is to get people comfortable running on trails and at this time of the year as people are out in numbers it is a lot less stressful to run on the trails, as there is no traffic. So over the next few weeks i will release more information on this and the new Trim trail in the Ballyhouras.

The 5km race in Doneraile was a great success on Friday night over 160 ran through the park on another fine Summers evening. There was a lot of support for this event locally among clubs and first time runners, as a couch to 5k event but the winner was no novice, clocking an impressive time of 16.02 almost a minute ahead of his nearest rival was, Eric Curran of Leevale AC winning in style. Well done to Michael Herlihy and all in the North Cork Athletics Club for doing such a good job.

Ballyhoura Active Series GR8km

The Ballyhoura Active series is in Mitchelstown this Friday night the 8th of August and it is the 5th running of the annual Galtee runners GR8km with a starting time of 7-30pm sharp. Race 5 in the popular Ballyhoura active cork road race series a big entry is expected this year following on the success of 4 previous years. New Headquarters in Mitchelstown’s newly built leisure centre. The Leisure centre will get its first chance to showcase its fabulous facility on the night by staging this annual sporting community event. The centre is spick and span and ready for use. The New course this year, has previous entrants wandering will this be a faster route than the old route, the jury is out at the moment, but according to many its a much quicker and a more scenic course than the old course, as the first mile and a half are within the town with the middle section on nice quiet country roads before returning back to the town for much needed vocal support, on the run in to the finish line at the leisure centre. Numbers participating in the GR8 have steadily continued to rise since its introduction in the road racing scene back in 2010, with 282 on the starting line last year.
Galtee Runners have really enjoyed being out and about racing this season, supporting other events, and recording some great times at these events, meeting new and old friends. We look forward to welcoming all of you to come along on Friday night as we play hosts this time, We hope that our event will prove to be as popular with you all as in past years. The course is accurately Measured by Jones counter, AAI race permitted, and part of the Ballyhoura series,The course is well marshalled, well signed, loads of friendly faces, fast times, loads of local support along the route, great prizes, water on route and best of all the great post race refreshments.
Registration can be got as usual on the night at the leisure centre from 5pm to 7-15 [entry is 10 euro] or to avoid the ques you can enter on-line through precision timing’s website, just click GR8km, enter and just collect your number on Friday night at a separate desk. Plenty of parking to be got with nearby Tesco’s, and Super Valu and the square with all easy access to the leisure centre.
8km is just under 5miles and is very achievable for all, worried about the distance, fitness, no need to, just as long as you know your limits, start off slowly and enjoying it, with the last person home equally encouraged as the first person home, take part with friends that way it won’t be too daunting, you will be surprised and delighted by completing it and starting a new life of health and fitness. All welcomed from walkers to fun-joggers to the competitive club runner. All start at 7-30pm with walkers asked to line up at the rear of the bunch to avoid any collisions that could arise. So all systems go for another successful GR8 in 2014.

Ballyhoura active series GR8km

The next race in the Ballyhoura Active is in Mitchelstown Co Cork on Friday night 8th August @8.00pm Galtee Runners AC have been running this race for the last number of years,it is a great event but this year there are a few changes including a new headquarters and some changes to the route and as well. All races in the series are certified and measured by Jones counter and have a Athletics Association of Ireland(AAI) permit.
The new base is the newly built Mitchelstown Leisure Centre, located beside Tesco,as you head in for Tesco it’s the 1st exit off the painted roundabout. From the pedestrian crossing [start] at the centre, the route takes us out of the Tesco entrance\exit, turn right, straight through traffic lights up church st, appro 60m up church st we turn left through Fanahans place estate, next right on to barrack rd, there turn right, head for Georges st, swing left on to Georges st, all the way down this tree lined road till you hit Kingston college garden, you turn left then down right , continue around the gardens on to Baldwin st where you turn left [1st mile] from here head straight through traffic lights through to Clonmel rd, from here on the course will be familiar to other years, only heading in opposite direction, out to the country until meeting a double roundabout at kilshanny, heading for and through Pollardstown, shortly after 3rd mile we head straight, or the right fork this bit of road we never used in previous years, this brings us out on the Araglin road where we turn right, back to Familiar roads again then from here we head back to town, turning right into Tesco’s entrance to finish keeping left back at the leisure centre, approx 50ish metres beyond the starting line. This is a faster, flatter course, most people think anyway, but definitely more interesting early on. The finish from a runners and spectators point of view is much better.
John Desmond will have a map of the new course on his blog (running in Cork).
